The Puncher
Handheld Dynamic Microphone
(coming in 2012)
Overview
For years, beatboxers just grabbed whatever microphone was on stage and ran with it. This mic was typically a Shure SM58, a microphone that was really designed with vocalists in mind. To compensate for the lack of good low-end response on this mic, beatboxers could cup the microphone. This focuses the sound into the microphone element and makes it "boomier". The side-effect of this grip is that the microphone element then becomes omnidirectional, pulling in sounds from all around it rather that just in front of it. This would cause feedback in many situations. To battle the feedback, you would cut some of the high-frequencies, resulting in a duller sound. We have selected a standard Shure SM57 microphone element and modified it to handle transients better and extend the high-frequency response. We have removed the long body of the typical handheld mic, in favor of a shorter and lighter custom-machined aircraft aluminum body, which is anodized for a nice finish that will wear well. A custom-milled high-strength polymer "cup" has been added around the mic element, to allow the beatboxer to grab the mic in the manner to which they are accustomed...but still allows air to move around the element, so it will be less prone to feedback.
The low-end frequency response is rolled-off slightly, so that The Puncher will pair well with a throat microphone like The Thumper.
